Being able to detect diseases or stress situations at early stages is important to guarantee that our domestical animals are raised and live in the best possible conditions. The use of biomarkers allow to monitor animal´s health and well-being in order to provide the best care, improve productive practices and obtain products with greater guarantees for the consumer.

Discover Acuvet solutions to analyse animal´s health and welfare biomarkers

Livestock producer

Maintaining high standards of animal health and welfare on farms is essential for their sustainability and profitability. It also allows to respond to consumer demands, obtain products of better quality, improve productivity and reduce the consumption of antibiotics in order to prevent antimicrobial resistance. Acuvet offers producers a monitoring biomarkers program. So, farmers can have better control of on-farm health and welfare status using objective and easy to determine parameters. Biomarkers are a useful tool in quality control programs or animal welfare certification systems. Their monitoring along the production chain, and with the veterinarian help, allow obtaining products with more guarantee for consumers, improve production practices and consequently the farms profitability.

Biomarkers such as acute phase proteins can help veterinarians to assess the degree of stress in animals, detect early inflammatory or infectious diseases and evaluate effectiveness of medical treatments. Analysis of a percentage of animals upon arrival at the farm allows to determine whether the group arrives in good condition or if it has suffered excessive stress during transport, which can lead to a higher incidence of diseases. Testing biomarkers makes possible to detect early problems in the peripartum or to assess the degree of inflammation after weaning, and see if animal adapt correctly. Biomarkers are a useful tool to detect critical points in the production system, and to control the effectiveness of biosecurity plans or plans for improving animal welfare.

Research, field trials and animal testing

Pharmaceuticals, nutritional additives, livestock equipment or breeding systems have to be tested to ensure their therapeutic or zootechnical value and safety. Acute phase protein (PFA) measurement allows researchers to assess the degree of stress, evaluate the inflammatory response or obtain a quantitative measure of animal welfare using an objective and easy-to-determine parameter. At Acuvet we provide researchers with reliable and well-validated analytical tools to carry out their studies with guarantees. Do you want to use these biomarkers in a study? Contact us, we advise you on the analytical options that best suit your needs. We can also help you with the experimental design and interpretation of the results.

Acuvet provide veterinarians with reliable analytical tools to improve clinical decision-making in order to provide the best care to the patient. Our Turbovet CRP canine test is specific to this species, and permits quantify quickly and reliably C-reactive protein levels in canine patients. CRP is used in the diagnosis and follow-up of inflammatory or infectious diseases. It is a very sensitive marker of inflammation and reflects the evolution of the disease, returning to baseline levels if the animal recovers. It allows evaluating the treatments effectiveness or detecting post-operative complications. The presence of high levels is always indicative of the existence of health problems, which may have gone unnoticed. The sensitivity of this analysis is higher than that provided by other inflammation parameters such as albumin globulin ratio or WBC counts. It can also be used to detect inflammation in animals where the bone marrow cannot respond to inflammatory stimulus, such as in cases of chemotherapy and leukemia treatments.

Laboratories

Having a reliable, well-validated and reproducible test is essential to be confident with your analytical results. At Acuvet Biotech we are committed to develop high quality tests. Our kits are specific for each species and have been properly validated. Our Turbovet line provides turbidimetry reagents for clinical chemistry analyzers (also for livestock species), making it easier for the clinical laboratory to incorporate these biomarkers into its analytical profiles. We also have ELISA tests for laboratories that do not have an analyzer or require more sensitive measurements. We also provide our customers with all the support they need to set up the assay in the lab or check that the measures work correctly.
